Hearing Aids

Hearing aids come in a variety of styles, each having its own advantages and limitations. Selecting a style that is right for you depends on a number of factors including the type and severity of your hearing loss, the size and shape of your ear, your personal and cosmetic preferences and how well you can handle the device.

STYLES

BTE (Behind the Ear) : Contrary to popular believe, they are not necessarily an “older” style. In fact, BTE hearing aids have the most circuit options and typically have more power than any of the custom-made hearing aids. BTEs sit on the back of your ear and are connected to custom-made earmoulds. They can be worn comfortably with or without eyeglasses.

Open Fit : Open Fit hearing aids use a miniature casing that fits behind the ear. The sound travels through a discreet ultra-thin tube that loops over the ear and enters the canal. Open Fit hearing aids are designed to keep the ear open, so the user does not experience occlusion (blocked ears) but maintain a high quality of sound. They also offer a cosmetically appealing option. They are lightweight and less noticeable than BTEs. These hearing aids suit people with mild to moderate hearing loss in the high frequencies.

RIC (Receiver in the Canal) : This is the newest style of hearing aid available today and has proved to be very popular. RICs sit on top of the ear and are connected to a small ultra-thin tubing with the receiver fitting right inside the ear canal. The result is an extremely comfortable wearing experience combined with an excellent sound quality coming from right inside your ear. They can be used for moderate to severe hearing loss, instead of larger BTEs.

CIC (Completely in the Canal) : CICs are the smallest hearing aids which are custom-made to fit deeply inside your ear canal so that they are practically invisible. CICs are suitable for mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

TC (In the Canal) : These hearing aids are custom-made to fit inside the external ear canal, making them almost unnoticeable. ITCs are appropriate for mild to severe hearing loss.

ITE (In the Ear) : ITEs are also custom-made to fit securely in your outer ear. They are larger in size and are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. These hearing aids are ideal for people who feel they might have difficulty in handling smaller models.

TECHNOLOGIES

Analog : Conventional hearing instruments with analog signal processing are adjusted manually with a fine screwdriver. Personalised settings are limited as systems like feedback cancellation, noise suppression or adaptive microphones cannot be integrated.

Digital : Due to tiny micro-processors, digital technology has been introduced into the most modern hearing aids. Acoustic signals are converted into a binary code at high speed and with great precision. Complex calculations provide the ultimate flexibility to individualise hearing systems to suit a particular hearing loss.
